How Grief and Loss Works

Moving Through Grief and Loss

We all experience grief or loss at some point in our lives, whether it be the loss of a loved one, a cherished career or job, a relationship breakdown or a loss of ability after injury.

Howearth Psychology can help people navigate the road to becoming comfortable with and accepting loss, and moving towards greater contentment with their lives.

What is Grief?

Grief is our intense emotional response to having lost something of value. The thing lost may a family member or friend, a pet, a job, a relationship, or even an opportunity. It can be anything that is important to us.

Grief will often pass with time, but can cause significant problems in our lives due to the impact that it has on our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

What does grief look like?

Like most complex emotions, grief can look very different for each person. It can involve sadness and depression, anxiety, frustration and anger, disappointment and numbness (to name a few).

Do I need to deal with my grief, and what can be done about it?

For most people, grief will reduce to manageable levels over the course of weeks or months. However if your grief is particularly intense or long-lasting, and negatively impacting you may benefit from psychological therapy to help reduce your grief and sense of loss.

Psychological therapy can help you move through the grieving process by changing your thoughts and behaviours, and moving you towards a state of acceptance.
