Cognitive Assessment

How Cognitive Assessment Works

What is a Cognitive Assessment?

Cognitive assessment involves the completion of various tests that measure how your mind works and what it is capable of.

Cognitive assessments are often used to help assess whether people meet criteria for a diagnosis, such as for a specific learning disorder or intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or in answering questions about general aptitude or mental ability.

Do I or my child need a cognitive assessment?

Cognitive assessment is very helpful in identifying a person’s strengths and weaknesses, and can be helpful to almost everyone. However, cognitive assessment is generally quite costly, usually involving several hours of testing by a trained clinician, followed by result compilation and report-writing.

You will usually be advised by your child’s paediatrician, or your psychiatrist if you need cognitive assessment. However some people simply want to understand themselves better, or may be seeking access to organisations with specific entry requirements, and therefore self-referral for cognitive assessment is also accepted at Howearth Psychology.
